Coaching
is a new profession, only 20 years old, that draws on wisdom from psychology,
spirituality, career counseling, personal growth programs, management consulting,
motivational training, life experience, and good old common sense. It
is a process designed to help you begin living your dreams and true desires faster
and more effectively than you would alone. Who
hires a coach?
Many people from all walks of life are turning to coaches to help them build better
lives. Many of my clients are professional people, healthcare providers, educators,
small business owners, business managers, and others who have already achieved
a great deal of success in their lives. The coaching relationship is a partnership
of two equals. My clients are smart and capable people who are eager to do and
be their best. They want my support in making significant changes in their personal
and business lives. What
does a coach do? My role as a coach is to be your advocate, mentor,
consultant, and success partner as you discover your inner voice, find more of
your authentic self, and develop the skills necessary to articulate and achieve
your vision and goals. The focus is on you, the client. I challenge you to live
your life in a way that uses your best talents, abilities, and special gifts. What
makes coaching work?
Coaching works because a coach listens well and asks provocative questions to
tap into your own inner wisdom. I provide the structure of ongoing support and
accountability as you take the action steps to achieve your goals. I celebrate
your successes with you and provide encouragement and direction when obstacles
get in the way. We stay focused and on track. Who
benefits from coaching? As long as you are willing to grow and
learn, and there is a gap between where you are and where you want to be, you
will benefit from coaching. How
are coaching and therapy different?
Therapy is a healing process designed primarily to help people recover from old
wounds and physical and/or emotional traumas or to treat specific mental disorders.
Coaching is an action-oriented process in the here and now that requires a great
deal of energy and stamina. Many people who have done some of their healing work
move on to coaching as an evolutionary next step when they feel ready to do the
work to make significant changes in their lives. What's
the format for coaching?
Most of my individual coaching is done over the telephone for 30-minute consultations
three times per month, with brief contacts and e-mails in addition to our regularly
scheduled sessions. Like any new and important relationship, it takes time to
get to know each other and build trust so that you feel comfortable telling the
truth about your life. I generally ask clients to make a three-month commitment in
the beginning, though many stay much longer as they experience the benefits.
Relationship Coaching with both partners involves 45-minute consultations and
is also scheduled three times per month. Group Coaching is scheduled around special
interest topics and arranged at the convenience of the participants. Creating
a life that you love takes courage, commitment, and hard work. Making the decision
to change your life starts by making a personal choice and taking the first step.
